LASIK Eye Surgery
LASIK eye surgery may be an option for you if you are having trouble with your vision. There are many things to consider before undergoing eye surgery some of which, unfortunately are the complications that could arise as a result of surgery.
Most patients who have undergone LASIK eye surgery have reported positive results such as normal 20/20 or better vision being realized. While sometimes complications can and do occur it is best to start off by saying that most elderly patients report that their eyesight is just as good after surgery than when they were younger.
As you can see from the statistics, the risks of laser eye surgery are very minimal, but it’s still good to get a grasp on what could happen. A few of the complications that may possibly arise are:
- Corneal abrasions
- Under correction
- Dry eyes
- Corneal flap wrinkles
- Infections
- Over correction
- Night glare
Some of these complications usually auto-correct over time as part of the healing process but there are some issues that could require additional eye surgery.
One of the frequently reported complications worth mentioning is a dry eye side effect immediately following LASIK eye surgery. This sometimes is one of the conditions that repair itself as part of the natural healing process over a time period of about a few weeks to up to six months. If the condition doesn’t get better after six months your doctor will recommend additional surgery.
Another problem that can occur will be an infection that will usually show up in the first week after surgery which will give your doctor enough time to take corrective action and prescribe an antibiotic eye solution.
Under Correction and Over Correct Can Happen with LASIK Eye Surgery
Over correction occurs when the laser sculpting the eye goes beyond the point of which was originally planned by the. This condition may resolve itself over time but can require the patient to wear eye glasses again and will possibly need additional eye surgery after a few months.
Under correction occurs a little more often than over correction but usually with people who suffered from severe nearsightedness where only objects that are looked at up close come in clear.
A small percentage of LASIK eye surgery patients suffer what’s called a corneal abrasion which is not a serious condition in that it will heal very fast, but may require an eye cover to promote healing.
Night glare is another condition of post-operative eye surgery which will naturally heal over time. The people that suffer the most from night glare are patients with large pupils which is why it’s a rare occasion.
Now that you know the risks involved with LASIK eye surgery are minimal and that a large percentage of patients recover 20/20 vision you may want to visit your ophthalmologist for a consultation.
