LASIK San Diego Eye Surgery

LASIK San Diego eye surgery is a very common procedure that’s used to change the shape of the clear part of your eye which is called the cornea.  The surgery is used to improve a patient’s vision and eliminate the need for eye glasses and contact lenses.

Almost always, the goal of LASIK surgery is to change the way light rays enter your eyes so that you can see things a lot more clearly.  LASIK surgery changes the way in which the cornea bends light rays that enter your eyes so that they can process images well and get rid of the blurriness.

The blurriness that you see is called a – refractive error – in medical terms and it occurs when there is a difference between the shape of the cornea and the length of the eye.  LASIK surgery helps to reshape the cornea so that light can be processed correctly when entering the eye.

The laser which is used for refractive eye surgery is called an excimer laser.  It is the instrument that is used to remove corneal tissue to reshape the eye.  LASIK surgery can also reshape the cornea so that it is thinner.

LASIK San Diego eye surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and will usually last between a few minutes to half an hour and unless there are serious complications where hospitalization is required the patient will be allowed to go home.

The doctor may place an eye patch over your eye after surgery in order to protect the eye from rubbing and pressure.  You can ask the doctor if the patch can be removed the following morning or in the next day post-op follow-up visit.

LASIK Patients and San Diego Eye Surgery in California

The most commonly treated San Diego LASIK eye surgery patients are people who suffer from myopia, or near sightedness.  LASIK can also help a few people with farsightedness and sometimes astigmatism issues depending on the severity and cause of the problem.

Firstly, in order to help the LASIK doctor decide which patients can be treated with LASIK surgery the doctor will usually follow guidelines set by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the FDA.

The guidelines were simply created in an effort to help quickly identify which people would be good candidates for LASIK San Diego eye surgery.  If a person for whatever reason doesn’t qualify for LASIK there may be other options available to the patient.

What certain types of problems can disqualify you from LASIK eye surgery?

If you take any of the following prescription drugs you could automatically be disqualified from the operation in some instances:

  • Oral prednisone
  • Accutane
  • Imitrex
  • Cardarone

In addition, children who are under eighteen years old can also be disqualified from LASIK San Diego eye surgery and, in a few cases people younger than 21 years of age can also be disqualified depending on the circumstances and the patient.

And lastly, your eyes must be healthy without any significant changes in vision problems or eye glasses a year before the LASIK San Diego eye surgery.  Your ophthalmologist will be able to determine if you qualify for LASIK surgery after a few tests and examinations.
