LASIK San Diego Surgery

LASIK San Diego surgery patients have a lot of things in common, one of which is that they almost always have the same questions about the procedure, but the main question that laser vision correction specialists hear the most is:

What can I expect?

This article was written in an effort to answer the question which is listed above with the most frequently given answers about LASIK surgery given by board-certified ophthalmologists in San Diego.

LASIK San Diego surgery is only performed by experienced laser eye surgery doctors who use a laser which is programmed to remove a small amount of tissue from your cornea in order to reshape the cornea and correct the refractive error causing the problems.

The Laser That the Doctor Uses During LASIK San Diego Surgery

The laser helps your eye surgeon by enabling him or her to do one of two things during the LASIK surgery:

  • Make the curve steeper
  • Flatten the curve of your cornea

The procedure that will be used on you depends on the condition of your eyes before the LASIK surgery.

If you suffer from nearsightedness the surgeon may recommend flattening the curve of your cornea, or if you suffer from farsightedness, the doctor may make the curve steeper.

In other words, one procedure is used for farsightedness and the procedure is used for nearsightedness.

The procedure that will be used on you will be determined during a pre LASIK San Diego surgery eye exam in which the surgeon will carefully measure your cornea to determine the shape of your eye and any irregularities that can be fixed.

LASIK surgery in San Diego Requires Specialized Equipment

The surgeon uses highly specialized instruments to measure your cornea and to determine which areas of your cornea need reshaping during the LASIK San Diego surgery. The laser is what enables the specialist to chart your eye and remove tissue from your cornea with incredible accuracy.

The eye chart that the laser produces after being programmed is almost like a topographical map of your eye which is what the doctor uses during the LASIK surgery to fix the refraction problem.

LASIK San Diego surgery is oftentimes over in less than thirty minutes. Most of your time will be spent in a small post-op care room where you will be allowed to lie down and begin to heal.

The nurse will give you medicine and/or eye drops before the LASIK San Diego surgery to help you relax and feel more comfortable.  After the eye drops are placed in your eye the doctor will install a special instrument to hold your eyelids open during surgery so that he or she can access the eye easily.

A suction ring will be placed on your eye just before cutting the corneal flap.  You may feel a little pressure as this is done and your vision may dim a little during the LASIK surgery, but this is normal procedure.
