Mission Bay
When Mission Bay was first developed along the San Diego coast, it was done so in an effort by the city to diversify the local economy. San Diego was mostly a military city at that time, in the 1940s, and development of Mission Bay as a tourist site was initiated to attract more people to the city.
The result is the largest aquatic park in the country, in addition to a variety of other recreational facilities that have developed over the years.
